Fundraising

NIOBA has pursued actively these aims and has organized Walks and other events. Proceeds from these are used directly to provide bursaries to support those going on an Outward Bound course. NIOBA has also generated funding from local companies thus enabling individuals and groups, many with special needs, to participate in leadership and multi-activity courses in Outward Bound Centres in Great Britain. The success of the Outward Bound Courses is such that demand has now outstripped our funding so NIOBA urgently seeks further support so we can continue to help young people.

How we help young people

Our aim is to help young people aged between 9 and 24, particularly those in most need from socially or economically deprived backgrounds and cross-community groups. NIOBA fulfills these aims by raising funds, which are awarded by way of bursaries to groups or individuals so that they can participate in challenging and demanding Outward Bound courses. Outward Bound is all about young people adapt to life’s challenges, personal development, character and team building. It is a challenge. The Outward Bound courses and bursaries are available to all aged 9 to 24. There is no discrimination on religion, race, colour, the fit and able or special needs, advantaged or disadvantaged or academic background, although, due to physical limitations, some centres may not be suitable for all groups.

Bursaries

The NIOBA and the Outward Bound Trust can arrange part funding.  This is a tremendous opportunity for schools colleges and apprentices to have it within their curriculum. Assistance may also be available towards travel. The Outward Bound Centre covers all risk assessments, as well as insurance, food accommodation and all equipment, including wet gear, rucksacks and even boots. Group leaders are only responsible for getting the party to the Centre and providing supervision after evening activities until bedtime. All other activities are under the firm control of experienced instructors. There is a pastoral care officer and night duty instructor in attendance. As we are currently over-subscribed there are presently no bursaries available from NIOBA but the Association can introduce you to alternative funding and the Outward Bound Trust’s bursary scheme. Successful candidates and groups will be expected to make a personal contribution towards the cost of the course and to seek additional sponsorship and/or funding.
